The New Covenant
Was the New Covenant made on the cross?
It is falsely believed by many Christian religions that this NEW COVENANT was made by Jesus when he was crucified on the cross. This is the NEW COVENANT that is found in Hebrews 8:6-13. This passage in Hebrews is taken from Jeremiah in chapter 31:31-34.
Chapter 31 of Jeremiah and Hebrews 8 reveal TWO VITAL pieces of information concerning this new covenant.
- WHO the new covenant will be made with – It will be made between God and the house of Israel (Lost ten tribes of Israel) and the house of Judah (Jews).
Heb 8:8For finding fault with them, (the people, not the covenant) he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a NEW COVENANT with the HOUSE OF ISRAEL and with the HOUSE OF JUDAH:
Jer 31:31; Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a NEW COVENANT with the HOUSE OF ISRAEL, and with the HOUSE OF JUDAH:
The NEW COVENANT will be made with both the PEOPLE OF ISRAEL (The lost ten tribes) and with the PEOPLE OF JUDAH (The Jews).
- THE TIMING of when the new covenant will be made – It will be made AFTER God re-gathers all the tribes of Israel and brings them back into the land of Israel.
Jer 31:32; Not according to [like] the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: 33But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; AFTER those days, saith the LORD, I will put MY LAW in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
When is after those days? The theme of Jeremiah is about God re-gathering all the tribes of Israel and bringing them back into the land of Israel. Therefore, after those days is after he brings them back into the land. God will make this new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah, after he brings them back into the land of Israel. This is how verse 33 should be translated.
But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the entire house of Israel; AFTER I plant them back in their land, saith the LORD,
So where does Jesus fit in? He is the MEDIATOR of the new covenant. Hebrews 8:6 …..… he [Christ] is the mediator of a better covenant, ……Jesus is the mediator of the new covenant, not the maker. Just as Moses was mediator of the first covenant, so will Jesus be the mediator of the New Covenant. A mediator is a person who attempts to make people involved in a conflict come to an agreement; he is a middleman that assists disputing parties in resolving conflict. The conflict is between God and man; it is our rebellion and our disobedience towards God”s law that is the conflict.
Jer 31:34; And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
When God makes this new covenant, no longer will people teach their neighbors, or say to one another, ‘Know the LORD’, because they will all know Him. Today, people are still teaching and witnessing to their neighbors, and still saying, “Know the Lord.” Furthermore, when this new covenant is made, God will put HIS LAW in our minds and WRITE IT on our hearts. Today, His Law is written in the Bible, not in men’s hearts. It is wrong to believe that this “NEW COVENANT” was made on the cross. It was not. The new covenant will be made when Jesus sits on His throne, after He regathers all the tribes of Israel back into the land of Israel. The Lord will make the new covenant with both the people of Israel and the people of Judah.
Verses 8 to 12 of Hebrews were borrowed, word for word, from Jeremiah 31: 31-34. Verse 13 in Hebrews, is new information concerning this new covenant, and Hebrews was written many years after the death of Jesus. Yet, the new covenant is supposed to have been made already. If so, why does the writer say that the old covenant will soon disappear (Future tense)? He should have said, “HAS VANISHED AWAY.” What has been overlooked here is the fact that this first covenant has not yet ceased, for the new covenant has not been made yet. The first covenant is obsolete, and it is aging, but it has not ceased or vanished yet. It will soon disappear, but not until the new one is made. The new covenant will be made when Jesus returns. When the new covenant is made, then and ONLY THEN, will the first one vanish!
Now, if this covenant had been made at Christ’s first coming, as most would have you believe, why is it that the Jews haven’t been included? They are still living with the old covenant. The fact that they are still living with the old only proves that the new covenant has not yet been made. It is plainly clear that this new covenant will be made with the House of Israel AND with the House of Judah. It will be made with the entire House of Israel.
Unfortunately, mainstream Christianity teaches a different version. They teach that this new covenant was made when Jesus came and died on the cross. Perhaps misinterpreted, perhaps misunderstood, or maybe even understood correctly, it would create a contradiction to their teaching and belief that the sabbath command has been abolished. They use this passage of scripture to help support their teaching that the old covenant has ceased. They say that Jesus made the new covenant at the last supper, and therefore, the old has ceased, or that we are not under the old covenant but under the new covenant.
In order to fully understand this new covenant, we need to study Hebrews 8:8 -12 in its proper setting, which is in Jeremiah 31. This is where the passage in Hebrews was taken from, and we need to look at it in the context of its proper setting, which is what we do in the book Mystery Babylon is no longer a mystery.
